A Dog Called Money

dir. Seamus Murphy, 94’, 2019, Ireland

A Dog Called Money, one of the most antisipated films at the 2019 Berlinale, is a joint work of singer PJ Harvey and military correspondent Seamus Murphy, which became a kind of diary about a trip to Afghanistan and Kosovo and the recording of the album. The emotions and impressions experienced during the journey through the three war zones turned into poems and music, which became the basis for the album "The Hope Six Demolition Project".

Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound

dir. Midge Costin, 95’, 2019, USA

Their work usually goes unnoticed by the public, but try to remove it from at least one episode — and all the magic of the movie disappears. Sound is the second main thing in the film after the big screen.

"Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound" is a fascinating story of the evolution of sound in cinema. Sound and sound design have overcome thorny paths — from Al Jolson's first voice in "The Jazz Singer" and the lion's roar recorded by Murray Spivack for "King Kong" to lightsaber duels in "Star Wars" and psychedelics acoustic landscapes of ‘Apocalypse Now’.

Insides and stories told by iconic directors like George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, David Lynch, Barbara Streisand, and Sofia Coppola, with whom we'll try to explore the evolution of sound in cinema to understand its global significance for world cinema.

If I Think of Germany at Night

dir. Romuald Karmakar, 105', 2017, Germany

The five heroes of the film — Ricardo Villalobos, Roman Flugel, Sonja Moonear, Ata and Move D — are now regarded as pioneers of German techno.

These musicians and DJs tell the audience about the development of electronic music and nightlife in Germany over the past 25 years. The DoP, Frank Gribe, is famous for his work on ""RUN LOLA RUN"" and ""Cloud Atlas"". In the first scene of the film, his camera is focused on musical equipment: keyboards, wires, amplifiers, consoles, controllers — these are the inhabitants of Ricardo Villalobos' studio. In such a familiar environment, each hero got enough time to talk about what attracted them to techno and how the club scene became a real burden of the 90's.

Max Richter’s Sleep

dir. Natalie Johns, 99’ ,2019, Germany/USA

Max Richter, a living legend of neoclassicism and postminimalism, wrote his 8-hour lullaby, "Sleep", at night. During the day he worked on the soundtracks for Danny Villeneuve's "Arrival", "The Leftovers" and "Shutter Island" starring DiCaprio. Later his concert was performed in a big way: in Grand Park in L.A., the Wellcome Museum in London and the Kraftwerk Cultural Center in Berlin.

"Sleep" is not just a silent revolt against the acceleration of the world, in which the focus of attention is measured in seconds. "Max Richter's Sleep" is more like a 90-minute lullaby that is worth watching with your eyes wide open.
