If I Think of Germany at Night

dir. Romuald Karmakar, 105', 2017, Germany

The five heroes of the film — Ricardo Villalobos, Roman Flugel, Sonja Moonear, Ata and Move D — are now regarded as pioneers of German techno.

These musicians and DJs tell the audience about the development of electronic music and nightlife in Germany over the past 25 years. The DoP, Frank Gribe, is famous for his work on ""RUN LOLA RUN"" and ""Cloud Atlas"". In the first scene of the film, his camera is focused on musical equipment: keyboards, wires, amplifiers, consoles, controllers — these are the inhabitants of Ricardo Villalobos' studio. In such a familiar environment, each hero got enough time to talk about what attracted them to techno and how the club scene became a real burden of the 90's.
